- İslam felsefesi geleneğinde din ile felsefe arasındaki ilişkinin mahiyetine dair tartışmaların tarihini, felsefi etkinliğin İslam dünyasındaki başlangıç dönemlerine kadar geri götürmek mümkündür. İlk defa Kindi (ö. 252/866) tarafından ele alınan bu ilişki, çeşitli filozoflar tarafından farklı açılardan yorumlanmıştır. Nihayet Gazzali (ö. 505/1111) bilhassa Tehafütü'l-felasife ve el-Munkız mine'd-dalal ve'l-mufsıh bi'l-ahval adlı eserlerinde bu sorunu felsefe ve filozoflara yönelik eleştirel bir yöntemle incelemiş ve bu inceleme neticesinde Farabi (ö. 339/950) ve İbn Sina (ö. 428/1037) gibi İslam dünyasında hakim felsefi gelenek olan Meşşailiğin büyük temsilcilerini tekfir etmiştir. Onun bu sert eleştirilerine felsefe cephesinden cevap ise Endülüs'teki İslam felsefe geleneğinin son büyük temsilcisi olan İbn Rüşd'den (ö. 595/1198) gelmiştir. O bir yandan Aristoteles'in (ö. 322 MÖ) eserlerine farklı üslup ve hacimlerde şerhler yazarken, diğer yandan da Gazzali'nin eleştirileri ile bu eleştirilerin Endülüs'teki yansımalarına cevap olmak üzere Faslu'l-makal fi takriri ma beyne'ş-şeriʻa ve'l-hikme mine'l-ittisal ile el-Keşf an menahici'l-edille fi akaidi'l-mille ve Tehafütü Tehafüti'l-felasife adlı eserlerini kaleme almıştır.Elinizdeki çalışma, İbn Rüşd'ün fakih kimliğiyle din karşısında felsefenin meşruiyetini, dini bilgi ile felsefi bilgi arasındaki uyumu ve dini nasları yorumlamada felsefi/bilimsel bilginin değerini büyük bir vukufiyetle ele aldığı Faslu'l-makal'in metin ve tercümesini içermektedir. Din-felsefe ilişkisini özel olarak ele alan ilk eser olma özelliğine sahip olan Faslu'l-makal'de ele alınan meseleleri derinleştirmeyi sağlamak üzere üç metne de ek olarak yer verilmiştir: İbn Rüşd'ün Allah'ın tikelleri bilip bilmediği meselesini incelediği Damime fi'l-ilmi'l-ilahi'si (İlahi Bilgi Konusunda Ek), el-Keşf'in sonunda te'vile konu olmaları açısından dini naslara dair yaptığı beşli tasnifi içeren kısım ve Faslu'l-makal ve el-Keşf'te sitayişle bahsettiği Gazzali'nin Faysalü't-tefrika beyne'l-İslam ve'z-zendeka adlı eserindeki beşli varlık tasnifi ve te'vil aşamalarına dair bölüm.
