Fantasy Editorial Review
**** "The Devils," the latest installment by Joe Abercrombie, presents a thrilling yet complex narrative that challenges traditional fantasy tropes. Though some readers feel it lacks the careful balance that characterizes Abercrombie's earlier works, it nonetheless showcases his trademark wit and gripping dialogue. The novel is centered around a quest that is anything but straightforward, following a motley crew led by a young woman with an unclear destiny and a unique set of companions—each defined more by their flaws than heroic virtues. Abercrombie's take on the familiar fantasy archetypes—vampires, werewolves, necromancers—reveals a subversion of typical heroism. The unexpected alliances formed in this dark, irreverent world make for compelling reading, as the narrative forces characters and readers alike to wrestle with moral ambiguity. The comedic elements often shine brightly alongside the darker themes, although some critics note that the initial portions of the book lag in pacing due to repetitive antagonists. Despite these criticisms, readers are captivated by the depth of Abercrombie's worldbuilding. The incorporation of rich historical references combined with magic as a manifestation of moral decay creates a unique setting that challenges the reader's beliefs and expectations. The characters are drawn with an unflinching lens, making them relatable in their imperfections. Overall, "The Devils" delivers an engaging story full of dark humor and complex moral questions, prompting readers to reflect on the nature of goodness, ambition, and survival in a world where nothing is black and white. While some may find the pacing uneven, it is clear that Abercrombie’s work has once again sparked the interest of both loyal fans and newcomers to his dark literary universe. **
