Malcolm's father is a minister, and his mother is a devout Christian, but their beliefs are challenged by Malcolm's questioning nature and his desire to explore the world beyond their small village.As Malcolm grows older, he becomes increasingly disillusioned with the strict religious beliefs of his family and community. He begins to question the existence of God and the validity of the Bible, leading him on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual exploration.Throughout the novel, Malcolm encounters a diverse cast of characters, including a group of traveling actors, a wealthy merchant, and a beautiful young woman named Florimel. Each of these encounters helps to shape Malcolm's worldview and bring him closer to understanding his own beliefs and values.As Malcolm's journey unfolds, he must confront the challenges of love, loss, and betrayal, all while grappling with the fundamental questions of faith and morality. Ultimately, the novel offers a powerful exploration of the human condition and the search for meaning in a complex and often confusing world.But although he was no coxcomb, neither had fed himself on romances, as Lady Florimel had been doing of late, and although the laugh was quite honestly laughed at himself, it was nevertheless a bitter one. For again came the question: Why should an absurdity be a possibility? It was absurd, and yet possible: there was the point. In mathematics it was not so: there, of two opposites to prove one an absurdity, was to prove the other a fact. Neither in metaphysics was it so: there also an impossibility and an absurdity were one and the same thing. But here, in a region of infinitely more import to the human life than an eternity of mathematical truth, there was at least one absurdity which was yet inevitable.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
