Middle Eastern Editorial Review
Look: Poems is an evocative collection by Solmaz Sharif that dissects the distortion of language in wartime, forcing readers to confront uncomfortable truths surrounding military vernacular. The poems explore how euphemistic language, as seen in the Department of Defense's terminology, dehumanizes the experiences of those affected by war. Through vivid metaphors and powerful imagery, Sharif examines themes of cultural identity and the emotional toll of conflict. Readers note the collection’s emotional weight, describing it as unsettling yet essential in understanding the violence obscured by language. This book serves as a necessary critique of complacency in the face of war, urging readers to reconsider the meanings rooted in our language and interactions.
